Beyond irreparable damage requiring the replacement of a dial, it was extremely common for Rolex service centers to replace dials once their tritium hour markers had ceased to glow. Consequently, it has become increasingly difficult to find vintage dials– especially sport model configurations – that are still in a . See more

Gilt dials were the first type of dial that Rolex used on their sport watches. These dials are easily identified by the gold text that appears on their surfaces. Unlike later-era sport dials . See moreThe mid-late 1960s marked the end of gilt dials and the introduction of Rolex’s matte dials. Unlike the gilt dials that they replaced, Rolex’s matte dials have a flat, grayish-black surface, with white text and painted tritium hour markers. While not as rare as gilt dials, the . This review will focus on the gilt dial s attributed to the Rolex 5513. The Gilt Rolex 5513 production date range is from 196 2 to 1966, with possibly some spill over into 1967, but I have not seen any original owner gilt models with 67 case backs.

I own quite a few gilt dial Rolex watches from between 1958 and 1966. At least two of them show dial deterioration characteristics that are consistent and very similar to the OP's watch. One of them, a 5513, has unquestionable provenance and service history because it was purchased new by my father in 1964.

By 1967, each of these Rolex sports models transitioned to using durable, non-glossy matte dials, thereby marking the end of Rolex’s fascinating and important vintage gilt/gloss dial era. The collecting gene for watches may be complex.

My elderly Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6565 has a variation on the gilt theme in that the numerals are debossed first before the dial is painted. This gives the effect of the exposed metal digits etc being above rather than below the dial lacquer. While the no-date Submariner is the quintessential dive watch, and has been produced for decades while maintaining most of it’s original DNA, the arguable king of all Sub references is the 5513, and some of the most interesting variants of this reference are those produced with a glossy, gilt dial. Dial designs for the Rolex GMT-Master 1675 are remarkably diverse over its 20-year production span. Two main groups are glossy dials for early versions and matte dials for later ones. There are numerous sub-variations within these groups.

Gilt Dials. The term “gilt” or “gilt gloss” refers to dials created by a galvanic coating process, which appears on GMTs until 1967. Galvanization refers to a method of coating metals with another substance through a binding chemical reaction. Source. Gilt Dial. Like we discussed in the last installment of Under The Loupe, Rolex used gilt dials in their early sports watch executions. The first few years of gilt dial 1675’s have a chapter ring (can be seen in the picture above), and then without the .
