Not sure which watch model generation you have - but few (if any) vintage cases can take a genuine Rolex sapphire crystal. You might find aftermarket ones but you’d risk poor fitment and loose waterproof-ness since gaskets and bezel wouldn’t be proper fit. I recently buffed out a scratch on a mineral crystal and had a very good result. I know sapphire is way harder but I also needed to use diamond polishing paste for the mineral glass. I wasn't sure if 10 microns was enough. Sapphire is significantly more scratch resistant than mineral glass, but it can and will scratch. Anything with silica (silicon dioxide) in it, such as dirt, sand, concrete, brick, has potential to scratch sapphire if presented with enough force. Sapphire scores a solid 9 out of 10 on the Mohs mineral hardness scale, just below diamond, making it even more scratch resistant than mineral glass. With its awesome capabilities, sapphire comes at a premium.

Doubt it’s a true scratch on the sapphire crystal. Many watches have an anti-reflective coating on the crystal that scratches. You typically can send them off to buffer the surface, but it’s relatively expensive and you’ll probably have another scratch in a . Sapphire crystal is effectively scratch-proof aside from some pretty aggressive materials. So either that was the worst luck in the world or it can be rubbed off using a fingernail. Could be wrong, I just knocked mine pretty hard a few times and it never shown on the crystal - the metal, yes - but not the crystal.
You will need two different grades. Start with something like 2.5-3.0 micron to remove the scratch but that will leave the area a tad hazy so you need to go over it a second time with a final polish 0.5-1.0 micron. Take some pauses if/when the crystal gets real warm.It’s not the sapphire that got scratched. Your watch most likely has a crystal with an anti-reflective coating (AR coating) on the outside or both sides of it.
